Biography
A native of Idaho, Norm has been painting for 24+ years. Considering himself to have always been an artist, it was the tutelage of an accomplished high school teacher that helped Norm develop his talents.
His first sale was made at the age of 16.
An avid outdoors man, Norm has concentrated on painting wildlife for the first 15 years. He’s exhibited as far west as Idaho, Wyoming, and Colorado. Most recently he has exhibited at The Wildwood Gallery in the Catskills of NY as well as the Wildlife Art Exhibition at the NY State Fair.
Having felt an epiphany, of sorts, five years ago Norm changed the direction and style of his art to include impressionism as well as more classic subjects of landscapes, florals, and figures.
Artist's Statement
Over the past 24+ years I have had several of what I would call personal epiphanies that have drastically changed the direction of my art.
The first occurred in high school where the tutelage of a fine art teacher revealed to me that I could actually make a living as an artist. I concentrated my efforts on acrylic depictions of wildlife.
Another occurred when I came across the works of Jeremy Lipking. I fell in love with his mastery of oils in figurative and landscape works. I immediately began painting in oils and learning how to manipulate that medium. I switched my focus from wildlife to primarily landscapes and some figures.
The most recent experience occurred when I did my first painting using only painting knives. The experience was invigorating. I completed that first painting in one sitting, working very quickly and intuitively. When I was done I found that I was filled with an excitement and power as if the act of painting had actually filled me with energy rather than expelled it.
I now look forward to the next evolution of my artist's life.
